Bangkok to Koh Samui via Surat Thani – The Ultimate Travel Guide
Flights from Bangkok to Surat Thani
Both Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK) offer direct flights to Surat Thani Airport (URT). Airlines operating this route include AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet Air. Flight times range from 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes.
My Experience Flying to Surat Thani
I flew with AirAsia on a morning flight from Don Mueang Airport which is smaller, making check-in and security faster. My flight took 1 hour 15 minutes. Note: A window seat is a great choice as it offers a stunning transition from Bangkok’s cityscape to Surat Thani’s lush countryside.
Arriving at Surat Thani Airport
After collecting luggage, head to the main building. Turn left and walk to the end wall where ferry check-in counters are located next to Exit 3. Staff checked our tickets on my phone and gave us stickers to show our destination. We had an hour to spare, so we grabbed breakfast and coffee at Auntie Mae’s shop.
Bus Transfer to the Pier
Buses are provided to the pier, after the flight it was schedule to depart at 09:30, and staff guided us to the correct vehicle. A 1.5-hour journey to Nathon Pier was scenic and comfortable. Upon arrival, we were directed to the Seatran Ferry terminal.
Waiting at Seatran Ferry Terminal
Nathon pier where Seatran ferries depart from had clean restrooms, a food court, and seating areas with hammocks by the sea. Our ferry was scheduled for departure at 12:00. At 11:30, we entered the air-conditioned waiting room. Once all passengers from the previous ferry disembarked, we were allowed to board.
Seatran Ferry Experience
All Seatran car ferries have three levels. On the lower deck cars and trucks are carried. In the middle section featured air-conditioned seating, VIP areas, and a small shop selling snacks, drinks, and ice cream. A foot massage service was available for 300 baht. Top deck provided open-air seating, perfect for photography.
Onboard Facilities
Surprisingly the Seatran car ferry was surprisingly clean in all areas, including the restrooms. Although there was no free WiFi, charging points were available near TV stations. Watching the stunning limestone formations and turquoise waters from the top deck was an unforgettable experience.
Arriving in Koh Samui
Upon arrival, we had no pre-booked transfer. Fortunately, plenty of taxis and songthaews were available. I hopped onto a songthaew heading to Chaweng. This ride took 45 minutes and cost 200 baht per person.
